I’m Christian McGilton, and I’m running for Mayor of Hazard because I believe Hazard isn't destined for the sideline, but can be brought back to it's former glory. It's service – not self-interest. I'm devoted to making our city stronger, fairer, and more connected for everyone who calls it home.
Working for Everyone in Hazard
I am 21 years old and I have had a long interest with politics and serving people of lower opportunity within all communities, this is something that stems from my experience in the Juvenile Justice system and the foster care system, seeing the way that many stories had similar and obvious key elements, poverty, lack of access, and non-community environment, not to mention the injustices that occur regularly in many state facilities not only in the state, but nationally. It is no surprise that Kentucky also fails to do due diligence when dealing with incarcerated children, but we in the community should be doing ALOT more to protect, develop , and prepare children, prepare them for life while developing skills that will set them ahead of their age groups, and protecting them from the consequences of choices made by people they had no control in electing.
That’s why I want to combat the root causes of issues we face, combat hunger, lack of housing, lack of opportunity for economic growth, and stagnant industry. There is no economic growth in a city and county that won’t move on to a new plan that benefits its citizens and their children’s future generations. This is evident in growing house prices in Perry county up almost 16% to 101k, but there is no job to match that in this county for many people to own a home. Is that a stainable community? Living paycheck to paycheck is common place, poverty rate in hazard is almost 3x the national average, sitting around 30-32%. The number one demographic is children under 18, making up over 60%, not to mention almost 53% of children in Perry county schools are “disadvantaged”. If we do not change course now, there will be last effects that will inevitably lead to the decline of hazard and its remaining residents.
Everything I believe – whether in government or community – has been rooted in a belief that every person deserves a voice and every neighborhood deserves investment. I’m running for Mayor to bring that same approach to City Hall: transparent, inclusive, and focused on real results.
And when election day rolls around, I believe that we as the people of Hazard will come to a conclusion and elect a mayor that will serve this city, it's not a matter of blue or red, but a matter of heart, and my heart rests in Hazard.
Every vote matters. Every neighborhood counts. Our Vision, Our Goal, Our Promise
Let's move Hazard forward – together.
